I follow what is stated in Consumer Guide and concur with their review completely which gave it a BEST BUY award. BUY THE MACHINE it’s fabulous. “The Espressione Cafe Retro is an elegantly styled unit that is both easy to use and efficient. Available in four different metallic colors (red, black, orange, or silver-now white also), the Cafe Retro sparkles thanks to a hint of glitter in its thermo painted metal. As its name suggests, this unit has a Retro look–with two silver toggle switches and corresponding mini bulb lights to indicate power/readiness and function (steam or espresso). There is also a thermostat indicator (with both Fahrenheit and Celsius markings) on the front, which lets you see the exact temperature for optimum brewing and frothing.
The Cafe Retro is equipped with quality parts, starting with a solid heavy-duty steel body and chassis with rust inhibitor, a powerful 18 BAR pump, heavy-duty 0.7-liter (24-ounce) aluminum boiler, and 1050-watt heating element. You also get two chrome-plated brass porta filters–one for use with ground espresso and the other suitable for use with pre-filled pods.
This machine is incredibly easy to use; just pre-heat the machine by flipping the on toggle switch, insert the appropriate filter, and when ready, flip the second toggle switch to activate brewing. The boiler needs no recovery time so you can brew multiple cups in succession. The removable water stand holds 3 cups of water.
The Espressione Cafe Retro 1385S is also equipped with a maxi cappuccino wand, which delivers a powerful jet of steam for expert frothing. The wand can also be set to dispense hot water for tea or cocoa.”

Although the box arrived in good condition and the machine was well-packed inside, the machine arrived broken. Makes me wonder when/where it was dropped! The front plate and knob were broken off. Since this affected the aesthetics only, we just glued it back on.
When my husband began to make our first lattes, the machine began to smoke. I dreaded the thought of having to pack it back up and go through the return process. How disappointed I was, especially since it was a Christmas gift!
Thank goodness my husband is good at fixing things! He removed the back cover to take a look at the insides, and low and behold, a couple of wires were not connected. Evidently, they became disconnected at the same time the front plate and knob were broken off. So he connected the wires and it has worked fine ever since Christmas.
For the price, it’s a little disappointing to have to rewire and glue it back together. But it sure does look cute on the counter, and the latte’s are exceptional!
